  • Notes
    • Nathaniel and Abigail moved to Norwich "West Farms", now Franklin, CT, and from there to Coventry, CT, where both lived the rest of their lives. AT Franklin he was active in both civil and ecclesiastical affairs, having served as selectman in 1721 and also having been chosen to serve in other important offices.

      From: http://www.laddfamily.com/688.htm

From the notes of John Ladd: He, as well as his brothers, received a common school education. They were raised on a farm and became farmers.

When his father was killed by indians and his brother Daniel taken captive, he was 14 and his brother, Joseph, was 16. It was necessary for them to devote full time to running the farm to support the family, which they did until Daniel escaped several years later.

When Daniel returned home he resented being under the control of his older brother, so he decided to leave home and make his own way. For about a year he stayed in Haverhill and worked for his uncle in a sawmill he operated. This mill had been built by his grandfather in 1659. While there, he lived with another uncle and was able to save most of his wages.

He left Haverhill and spent several years at various places in Connecticut and Massachussetts working at any job available. In 1706, at the age of 22, he had saved enough money to purchase a small farm at Franklin, CT.

In 1707 he met Abigail Bodwell, a daughter of a local farmer, and they married the following year. On February 12, 1710, their first son, Timothy was born.

About this time, he purchased a larger farm in Coventry, CT which was a newer settlement about 15 miles north of Franklin and situated on Lake Waumgumbaug.

In Coventry he prospered, added more land, an also took active part in church and civic affairs. He served as Selectman for the town for many years. Also held other public offices.

Nathaniel died at Coventry, Ct on June 11, 1757 at the age of 73. The records show his wife died on 8/7/1798 and would have been over 100 as they were married in 1708. It is possible that Abigail had passed away earlier and he married a younger woman.

Notes from Warren Ladd: He removed to Norwich, "West Farms", now Franklin, CT and from here to Coventry, CT, where he died, June 11, 1757. At Franklin, CT he was of considerable prominence in civil and ecclesiastical affairs, having served as selectman in 1721, and having been chosen to important offices in the society.
