  • Notes
    • Notes from 1800 United States Census of Halifax County, North Carolina - "Joseph Howell - 2 other persons" (Matthew Howell, Sr and Matthew Howell, Jr. families also appear)

From William Heard Kilpatrick notes from a book which belonged to his father - Rev. J.H. Kilpatrick:

"McKinne Howell had three brothers, Joseph, Matthew and William"
"Joseph had three children Abram [?], Isaac, and Nancy."

From "House of Howell" by Annie Davidson Howell:

"Joseph was married twice and had three children, Isaac, Abram and Nancy"

Only evidence I have that the Joseph Howell, age 79 in the 1850 Hancock Co. Georgia Census is the Joseph that is brother of McKinney Howell is:

-Joseph Howell also appears in the 1830 and 1840 census - very likely the same person in all 3 enumerations as there is no other Joseph, and ages for the eldest female also match.

-This Joseph was b. NC and the census Joseph was b. NC. We know from McKinney Howell's history that he came to GA with his brothers from NC.

-Nancy Howell age 64 is living in the same house.  Rev. Kilpatrick notes that Joseph had a daughter Nancy - so this Nancy could be his wife or sister for whom the daughter was named.

-Alford Howell age 26 is living in the same house - could be Abram[?] in Rev. Kilpatricks notes?

1820 Census Hanckock Co. GA- (Note: There are two Joseph Howell families).  The Joseph Howell on p.103 is neighbor to James Reynolds and is a slave owner: 2 Males 10-16 (Abram, Issac), 1 Male 26-45 (unknown), 1 Male 45 and over (Joseph - age 49 if b. 1771), 1 female 16-26 (Nancy, 16 if b. 1804), 1 Female 26-45 (Jos.'s wife age 34 if b. 1786), 7 Slaves and 4 free colored persons.

The other Joseph Howell family is enumerated in Hancock Co. is in Capt H. Williams' District: 1 Male 10-16; 1 Male 16-18; 1 Male 16-26, 1 Male 45 and up; 1 Female 26-45. No slaves.

1830 Census Hanckock Co. GA - Joseph Howell  family 1 Male 10-15 ; 1 Male 50-60 [Joseph from 1850 census would be 59];  1 Female 5-10; 2 Females 15-20; 1 Female 40-50 [Nancy from 1850 census would be 44]; no slaves. Note: Rev Kilpatrick says "Joseph had 3 children, Abram[?], Isaac & Nancy. Possibly Abram[?] is a female eg: Abigall or was born after 1830.

1840 Census Hanckock Co. GA - Joseph Howell family only one with Howell spelling (2 other families spelled Howel - one l)  1 male 20-30 [so prob 20-25 based on 1830 census, not a match to Alford in 1850 census who would be 16], 1 male 60-70 [Joseph in 1850 census would be 69]; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 50-60 [Nancy from 1850 census would be 54]. No slaves.

1850 Census Hancock Co. GA - Joseph Howell age 79 b. NC, Nancy Howell age 64 b. NC, Alford Howell age 26 (Idiot) b. NC. Note: Alford's age does not match the male in the 1830 or 1840 census.
