Notes |
- From "House of Howell - Thaddeus Brockett Rice - Historian for Greene County notes:
"Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Howell moved to Lafayette, Chambers County, Alabama, where Mrs. Howell died and left the above mentioned two sons (jsh: Thaddeus and Leonidas), around ten and twelve years of age. Being apprised of Mrs. Howell's illness, her mother, Mrs. Samuel Davis, and her sister, Mrs. Thomas Stocks, went in their carriage to Lafayette Co. Mrs. Isaac Howell died soon after they reached there. Isaac Howell consented for Mrs. Stocks to bring the two boys back to Georgia and she reared and educated them at Mercer University when it was located at Penfield, Greene County, Georgia. However, their education was not complete when the War Between The States began in 1861. Both boys, "Thad" and "Lee" enlisted in the Confederate army, and both were killed at Gettysburg. The Rice's have a good portrait of Leonidas Howell an some of the schoolbooks he studied while attending Mercer"
From William Heard Kilpatrick notes from a book which belonged to his father:
"Isaac married a sister of C.A. Davis and moved to Alabama - became a printer [?]."
Appears on the census of 1860 living in Chambers Co., AL - Farmer, Value of personal estate $1,500, real estate value $300
JSH notes:
Some genealogies say b. Taliaferro Co., in 1810, but Taliaferro did not exist until 1825 when it was created out of Greene, Hanckock, Oglethorpe, Warren, and Wilkes counites. [16]
