Notes |
- Eulogy: "...just as the sun set in a glorious glowing sky."
"Under the pines, on the singing sands, by the cool waters"
The following from "The Family of James Stephens"
George was born on January 27, 1869, on his parents farm near Morpeth, Ontario, and began his education in the nearby Slabtown School.
At the age of thirteen he moved with his parents to Portage la Paririe, Manitoba. After high school in Winnipeg, and a year's teaching, he entered Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating in 1892 with the degrees of B.A. and B.D. Later, he earned a second degree of b.D. from Chicago, and still later was honored with a degree of D.D. from both Drake and Culver-Stockton Universities.
His pastorates included two years in Hiawatha, Kansas, twelve years at Austin Christian Church, Chicago, which he started as a mission, and twenty-seven years in Missouri, seven of them at First Christian Church in Hannibal and twenty (1918-1938) at Union Avenue, St. Louis.
While in St. Louis, George, and able preacher with a genius for leadership, served on numerous denominational committees and inter-church commissions. His passion for Christian unity and religious co-operation kept him active in state, national and international church affairs. He wa chosen as Vice-President and then as President of International Conventions of his church, and in 1925 was a delegate to the Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work at Stockholm, Sweden. In 1930 he went with his wife, Luna May, to leeds, England, as a fraternal delegate to the Churches of Christ in Great Britain and Ireland. his eminence in his profession was recognized by a poll of his fellow ministers which naemd his as one of their top ten.
George was also well known as a contributor to religious periodicals. His " Pastor's Column" in "Unionavenews" was widely read and, after his retirement, he edited the "Christian Evangelist" for two years. As an author, he wrote "Chores and the Altar" and his autobiography, "Friends are My Story".
A freiend once described George as "large of frame, strong of countenance, reflective in appearance, amssive in intellect, personality and speech. The changing shadows across his face, the deep set eyes,- speculative, quizzical, humorous, changing,- the strong mouth and chin and the heavy eyebrows gave to him always a manner of expression on never-ending interest. And how he loved conversation! He was full of charm. Everything he did in committee or out, in pulpit or parlor, on the street or about the table, was colored by his love of people and his instinct for friendship".
In 1892, George married Luna May Jameson, daughter of Robert Bruce and Rosa Melinda (Ingels) Jameson. She passed away on March 10, 1940. George's death occurred at his summer cottage at Pentwater, Michigan on August 7, 1943. Burial was in St. Louis.
Emily Campbell Price notes:
"Minister of the Disciples of Christ Church; B.A. and B.D; also Honoury D.D. Degree from both Drake and Culver-Stockton Universities; author." [4, 5]
