- Notes from My Search for John Stephen Jackson:
"As a citizen soldier in the Georgia Militia, Abner Veazey was called into active service on three separate occasions"
"1) 1813 - as a Private in State Service during the Creek Indian Wars"
"2) 1814, 15 - as a 3rd Lieutenant in Federal Service during the War of 1812: On a roster of Captain Colbert's Company of Greene County militia, Abner Veazey is described as being 39 years old, 5ft. 7in tall, of light complexion with blue eyes and sandy hair; this roster also notes that Abner has been promoted from Private to 3rd Lieutenant"
"3) 1818 - as Captain in Federal Service during the First Seminole War"
"And according to Walters, 'Captain Abner Veazey' was a prominent member of the American Colonization Society, whose primary purposes were 'to suppress the slave trade, to aid in manumitting (freeing) slaves, and to remove free Negroes from the United States to Liberia'. Listed amonth the charter members of the Putnam County branch were such prominent men as John McBride (Abner Veazey's son-in-law)...Rev. Alonzo Church...Rev. Coleman Pendelton..." [9]
