  • Notes
    • JSH notes: Each "share" of vessel ownership usually represented 1/64th of the total ownership.

Marlene Hickman notes (25 May, 2007):

"According to a recent book published by Tantramar Heritage Trust and compiled by Dale E Alward entitled "Down Sackville Ways - Shipbuilding in a Nineteenth Century New Brunswick Outport", Joseph Hickman owned at least eight shares in the following vessels built in Sackville:"

"1845 - "Dorchester" - schooner - 42 tons - built by Christopher Boultenhouse - owners listed were Martin Bulmer, Gideon Palmer, Joseph Hickman, Dorchester."

"1872 - "E. Chambers" - schooner - 215 tons - built by Alfred D Cole - Albert J Smith, Dorchester; Abner Smith, Sackville (4 shares); Joseph Hickman, Dorchester; Joseph A Read, Sackville."

"1873 "Riberia" - brigantine - 299 tons - built by Alfred D Cole - Joseph L Black, Oliver Barnes, Richard C Boxall, Sackville; Robert McKay, Moncton; Joseph Hickman, Dorchester."

"These would be in addition to the following:

      November 24, 1870 - Chignecto Post

"Seized - The schr "Rosebud" Capt E Palmer, Master, was seized at Dorchester on Monday morning last on her arrival from Boston for some pervious infraction of the revenue law.  She was laden with goods for Sackville and Moncton.  Permission was obtained to bring her here (Sackville?) to discharge and she arrived at this port yesterday.  She is owned by Messrs Gideon Palmer, Joseph Hickman, A J Smith, Alex Robb and Capt E Palmer, Dorchester, and John Bell of Sackville."

As well his will listed shares in the following vessels at the time of his death in 1889 -

      "Bessie May" - 4/64 shares   &  "Sarah Chandler" - 2/64 shares.

      Marlene Hickman notes:

"Joseph probably had shares in vessels but Wm was the builder."

"Joseph was also a politician with his older brother John."

"From what I understand The Sessions was a form of County Council government with presentation from each of the parishes in the County, representatives chosen by ballot of the male residents."
