    • AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM LAWRENCE HOWARD, M.D.

I was born Feb. 13, 1906 at home on our farm in the Laurel Grove neighborhood. I was delivered by the late Dr. John Duhadway whose home and office were in Harmony. Both of my parents, the late John W. Howard and Lenora Love Howard, were born in Caroline County and spent their lives there. My grandfather, Frederick Howard, migrated from England to this area at age 6. I had an older brother, the late L. Claude Howard of Caroline County, and a sister two years younger, the late Mary Howard Magee.

When I was 5, my family moved to a farm near American Corner. I attended the American Corner one-room country school for 6 1/2 years until my parents decided that it would be to our best interest to transfer my sister and me to the Federalsburg High School. At that time there were no school buses or other forms of public transportation. We provided our own transportation -a horse and carriage- for a 12 -mile round trip each day. We would leave home soon after 7 a.m. for Federalsburg, where we left our horse in the hands of an attendant at the Farmer's Shed. After a short stretch and maybe a warm up on cold days, we walked mile uphill to the school. In spite of the conveyance problems, we had very good attendance records.

I graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1923. There were 15 in our class -- 12 girls and 3 boys. Following high school I attended the University of Maryland at College Park and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1927. After teaching math and science at the Delmar, Maryland High School for three years, I returned to the University of Maryland Medical School, where I received my M.D. in 1934. I was selected to intern at University Hospital, and after completing one year as a rotating intern, I continued on for two more years as an assistant resident and then resident in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat.

After completing my residency, I began active practice in my specialty in Salisbury, Maryland and became a member of the staff at the Salisbury General Hospital. During the second World War I was declared essential in my community by the draft board, and I continued to practice EENT until after the war ended. At that point I gave up the practice of Ear, Nose, and Throat and confined my practice to Ophthalmology. I retired at age 70 after 40 years of practice.

I was married for 60 years to the late Marguerite Freeney Howard. We have three daughters: Lynn H. Howell of Rosemont, PA; Ann Howard (Bray) of Tenafly, NJ; and Diana H. Dameron of St. Petersburg, FL. Since 1988 I have been married to Mildred Hayman Howard.

From a Salisbury, MD Newspaper prob. Daily Times, (unknown date, contains photo):

      RECEIVES HIGHEST DEGREE

The following obituary appeared August 23rd, in The Daily Times:

      William Lawrence Howard, M.D.

SALISBURY -- William Lawrence Howard, an ophthalmologist who practiced in Salisbury for 40 years, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at his home in Salisbury. He was 99.

Born Feb. 13, 1906, on a farm in the Laurel Grove neighborhood of Caroline County, he was the son of the late John W. Howard and Lenora Love Howard. A brother, L. Claude Howard, and a sister, Mary Howard Magee, preceded him in death.

Dr. Howard graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1923 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1927. He taught mathematics and science at Delmar High School for three years before entering the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore, where he received his M.D. in 1934.

Following his residency at University Hospital, he began active practice of eye, ear, nose and throat (EENT) in Salisbury in 1937. He became a member of the staff of Peninsula General Hospital at a time when there were only 26 doctors in all of Wicomico County. Declared essential to the community in World War II, he continued to practice EENT until the war ended. He then limited his practice to ophthalmology.

While engaged in medical practice, he was a member of the American and Southern Medical Associations, the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of the State of Maryland, the Maryland Ophthalmologic Society, the Society for the Prevention of Blindness and the Wicomico County Medical Society.

Dr. Howard's civic activities included charter membership in the Kiwanis Club and participation in the Tri-State Sportsman Club, where he served as both secretary and president. He was also president of the North Salisbury Elementary School PTA. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury for more than 50 years and served on its official board.

He became a member of Delmar Masonic Lodge No. 201 -- AF & AM in 1936 and later became a charter member of Centennial Lodge No. 221 -- AF & AM in Salisbury. He was named an honorary 33rd degree Mason after the second World War. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies of Salisbury and Baltimore, a Shriner in the Boumi Temple in Baltimore and a member of its 100 Club. He served as a Wise Master of the Salisbury Chapter of Rose Croix, a Venerable Master of the Salisbury Lodge of Perfection and as a Grand Tall Cedar.

As a capital venture, he was involved with the late Paul A. Croll in a successful chicken business, the Caroline Poultry Co. in Federalsburg. They later sold the company to Textron Corp.

His first wife of 60 years, Marguerite Freeney Howard, died in 1987. He later married Mildred Hayman Onley.

(Ed: Also included at this point in the obituary were names of surviving relatives.)

A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar on Thursday at 11 a.m., prior to interment.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Asbury United Methodist Church, 1401 Camden Ave., Salisbury, Md. 21801; or Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, International Shrine Headquarters, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33607-1460.
