Notes from Irish Canadian Cultural Association:

William Wells emigrated from Yorkshire, England to New Brunswick in 1772. He eventually settled at Point de Bute, Westmorland County. He married Margaret Dobson, daughter of George Dobson. They had thirteen children.

"William Wells, mason, of Thirsk, Yorks. Arrived at Fort Cumberland in 1773,[see note #]98 via Boston, with his wife Margaret (Dobson) and their children. [see note #] 99 See also The Chignecto Isthmus. Contact: Barb (Wells) Henderson "

Note 98: "A memorandum signed in Yorkshire by George Dobson and William Wells on February 4, 1773 is evidence that neither man arrived in North America before that date: `We George Dobson and William Wells, two of the trustees of the New Room in Thirsk as appointed in this Indenture do in consideration of our intending to leave Great Britain in a little time in order to settle in foreign parts, hereby of our own accord and free will give up quit and resign the said trust to all intents and purposes whatever that is by this said indenture reposed in us. Witness our hands this fourth day of February, one thousand seven hundred and seventy three. Signed -- George Dobson, William Wells, Witness John Oastler'."
