The Canadiaon Biographical dictionary in reference to E. D. Davison notes:

"In 1839 he married Desiah Mack, daughter of Elisha Mack, of Mill Village, whose grand-father, Samuel Mack came to Nova Scotia from Connecticut about 1764, and was a prominent man in his day."

    Charles Donald Davison notes:

"Samuel Mack moved from Connecticut to Port Medway, N.S. in 1764.  He bought land and mill from Smith & Mosley the first resident settlers of Mill Village."

    From shouthshorenow.ca notes:

"Samuel Mack is of interest not only as the archetypal "Connecticut Yankee" entrepreneur, the founder of what was to become the Edward Doran Davison lumber empire, which relocated to Bridgewater after the devastating fire of 1865, but as a slave-holder. (He advertised for the return of run-away slave Chance.) Mack was the great uncle of Joseph Smith Jr., the Mormon Prophet (Samuel's brother Solomon was Smith's maternal grandfather) and foster-parent to William Burke, credited with being the first permanent settler in North Queens. Samuel Mack was responsible for establishing the Macks as the dominant family at Port Medway Mills, later Mills Village, finally Mill Village."

(Research):JSH Note - not sure if the Samuel Mack in the two articles below is this one.

From "A History of North Queens":

"William Burke was born in 1764, the son of Walter and Nancy Burke of Halifax. William*s father had recently migrated to Halifax from England and worked as a blacksmith in His Majesty*s navy yard in Halifax. When William was seven years old his father died. William was then taken in by Samuel Mack, a wealthy merchant in Port Medway (now Mill Village). Here, although his foster father lived by the mercantile trade, William took a great interest in the woods and hunting. "

From Genealogical Newsletter of the Nova Scotia Historical Society no. 10, January, 1975:

"Burk, burke.  William Burke was son of Watt Burk, a blacksmith at H.M. Dockyard, Halifax, N.S.  He was born at sea about 1764 and was brought to Mill Village, Queens County, at the age of seven by Samuel Mack, a grand-uncle of Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet."

    Possibly his Pedigree http://www.riddel.com/tree/ped/ped04393.htm  ???

    From http://genforum.genealogy.com/mack/messages/751.html

"My research indicates that the first Mack to arrive in Mill Village was Samuel Mack who was from Lyme, Conn. Samuel's grandfather is reported to have been John Mack who was born in Inverness, Scotland and settled in Salisbury, Mass. in 1669 and moved to Lyme, Conn. in 1690."
