Frederick and Sara Howard - Obituary
Denton Journal, Denton, Maryland, 19 Dec 1925, Sat • Page 5
"The funeral of Mr. Frederick Howard, who died December 6th, after a lingering illness, was held at the home in Williston, on December 9th, and was largely attended. Rev. L. I. Tafel, of the New Church, spoke feelingly of the life and character of the deceased. Mr. Howard was born in England 77 years ago and came to the United States with his parents when a boy of 6. His family settled in Philadelphia and engaged in the manufacture of plush and other fabric. When a young man, Mr. Howard came to Caroline, where he married Miss Sarah Priscilla Andrews. Four children of the marriage survive -- Mr. John W. Howard, Mrs. William T. Love, Mrs. Edward B. Maloney and Mr. Frank Howard, of this county, and an adopted son, Mr. Harry Haskins, of New York. Two brothers. Mr. John Howard of Pennsylvania and Mr. James Howard of New Jersey, also survive. An only sister died in her youth. Interment was made in Federalsburg cemetery."
"On December 15th, Mrs. Sarah P. Howard, widow of Frederick Howard, who preceded her by only ten days, died at Williston, aged 73 years. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ager Andrews, who were Delawareans. She has two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lizzie Legates, of Federalsburg, and Mrs. C. T. White, of Philadelphia. Mrs Howard made many friends by her happy disposition. Se expressed a desire when her husband died not to stay here without him. 'So God took her.' Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from her home on Saturday, December 19th, at 1 o'clock. Interment will be made at Federalsburg."

A brief History of the Howard Family
by Sadie Howard Maloney in 1959
James Howard, the oldest ancestor of the Howard family of which I have record, was born in England 1796; died 1887 at the age of 91years and was buried at Hyde Chapel Gee Cross, Hyde, England.
He was twice married. His first wife was Hannah Leighton. Three children by this marriage, namely, John, James and Hannah. His second was Jane Shyrock. Four children by this marriage, namely, Charles, William, Thomas, Chariot.
[JSH note: This genealogy differs from the text above and shows Hannah Howard, born in 1849, as Jane's daughter, as Hanna Leighton died in 1840]
About 1854 John, oldest son of James Howard, and wife, Sarah Bew Howard, with their children, came to America in a sail vessel, taking about 6 weeks for the voyage. Shortly after this date his brothers followed. Chariot always lived in England, where she married and raised her family. The first families that came to America settled in Bucks County, Pa., but soon moved elsewhere.
About 1868-1870 Frederick Howard, oldest son of John and Sarah B. Howard, came to Maryland and had built for his parents the house in which Elsie and Andrew Towers now live. He bought the adjoining farm, where all of his children were born and raised.
The Charles Howard farm nearby is quite a landmark which still remains in the family, now owned by his daughter, Lottie Howard Graham. Howard’s School was built on this land and many of our children will always cherish the spot where they spent their first school days. This property is located in Caroline County, Maryland, between Denton and American Corner. John and Sarah B. Howard also owned other farms near Laurel Grove.
At that time there was a school house and Methodist Church at Laurel Grove, where the children or families of Charles, Walter, Frederick and John Howard attended church and school. We, of that generation, cherish the spot and have precious memories. James and Alfred Howard owned these farms and they are still in the family. Robert Towers, son of Elsie and Andrew Towers, owns one of the farms. Mark Howard, son of Charles Howard, and the heirs of Alfred Howard, son of John and Sarah Howard, own the remaining land.
James married Hannah Leighton. Hannah was born in 1796; died in 1840. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
