    Notes:

Born one month after the death of his father.

WL Howard in 2002 told this story about his father in law, Thomas Barton Freeney:

Barton was truly an amazing man. He was the youngest in the family.  He never knew his father because he died only a month before Barton was born.  He was brought up by his mother and sisters in Delmar, MD.  He was very self motivated.

When Barton was in 3rd grade his teacher gave him an undeserved beating that was so bad his mother decided he would never go back to school.  So he stayed home, and as he grew up took good care of his mother.  When he was old enough, he worked for the railroad in Delmar, eventually becoming a telegraph operator.

In his spare time Barton worked for a local jewler repairing watches. He was so talented that he was encouraged by his employer to attend an "Horology" school in Philadelphia so he would learn the 'science of watch repair' and jewelry making.

Barton managed his schedule at the railroad so as to work the early shifts, and then on school days, took the train to Philadelphia in the afternoon to attend classes.  In Philadelphia his instructors recognized his talents and encouraged him to attend Optometry school.  Armed with his Horology and Optometry degrees, he opened his own watch repair and optometrist shop in Delmar, MD which became very sucessful.

Barton played woodwind instruments (clarinet) in the Tall Cedar Band, which is a branch of the Masons. Also played the accordion.

His WWII draft registration card was completed April 25, 1942 as follows: Thomas Barton Freeney, 202 East St, Delmar, Wicomico Co, Md. (P.O. Del). No telephone, age 58, born Wicomico County Feb 22 1884, Md. Contact: Mrs. Sarah W. Freeney. Employers name "self", Optometrist, 202 East St., Delmar, Wicomico, MD (P.O. Del), Physical: White, Height 6' 180 lbs, gray eyes, gray hair, light complexion.

His WWI draft registration card lists his occupation as a Telegraph Operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in Delmar, Delaware.

His estate was reported in The Daily Times, Salisbury, Maryland 14 Feb 1951, p9 Administration Accounts "In estate of Thomas B. Freeney, Delmar; Dr. W. Lawrence Howard, Salisbury, administrator.  Total estate $72,859.85. For distribution: $59,193.22"

Thomas married Sara Jane Webster on 18 Jun 1906. Sara (daughter of Zachariah Horatio Lore Webster and Elisabeth Ellen Brewington) was born on 10 Aug 1887 in Quantico, Wicomico, MD; died on 1 Aug 1954 in Salisbury, MD; was buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Sussex Co., Delmar, DE. Notes:

JSH notes on the spelling of Freeny / Freeney:

Thomas Barton Freeny Sr's. name appears in the family bible and in newspaper articles spelled "Freeny".  His wife Emily, has her name spelled Freeny on her gravestone.  An exception to this spelling was in the 1880 census where Thomas Barton Freeny's name was spelled Freeney.  All of Thomas' and Emily Goslee's children's names appear in the family bible as Freeny.  But without exception all the children spelled their names Freeney - so it would seem that is where the spelling change from Freeny to Freeney took place.

WL Howard has an old framed map of Wicomico County, MD showing the location of the Freeney blacksmith shop.

    "Untimely death at age 34."

    W. Lawrence Howard, M.D. notes: "He was delirious and fell out the second story window of his house, where he then hit his head on a tree stump and died."

    JSH notes:

Surviving him upon his death were: His wife Emily (age 34 yrs), Children: Leonia (9 yrs), Fannie (8 yrs), Anna (6 yrs), Mae (4 yrs), Edgar (2), Barton (unborn). Parents: Peter (age 73), Elizabeth (age 60).

    Ann Howard notes:

"Marguerite Howard (Grandma) found the graves of her grandparents, Thomas Barton and Emily Goslee Freeney, on their old farm in very bad shape and had the bodies and stones brought to the cemetery in Delmar.  They are now buried with her parents, Thomas Barton Freeney, Jr. and Sara Webster Freeney.   Grandma's grave is also there, and Gramps (William Lawrence Howard, M.D.) has a gravesite next to hers."

    JSH notes:

His gravestone says he was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Freeney.

Peter and Elizabeth and Thomas B. Freeney Sr. appear on the 1860 and 1870 census together.  In the 1860 census he appears as Thomas B. age 10, and in the 1870 census he appears as "Barton Freeney", age 19.  Thomas B. Freeney's son had the same name and was also called Barton by his family (and Papappa by his grandchildren.)

The gravestone is inscribed Born: November 19, 1826, Died: October 13, 1894, Age: 67 years 10 months 24 days. - (there has to be an error as the dates on the headstone don't reconcile with each other.  Assuming the date of death and her age at death were correct - then her birth date is Nov 19, 1825 - one year later than what appears on the stone.

Inscription on gravestone transcribed by Wanda Dawson reads:

Oh mother thy gentle voice is hush
Thy warm true heart is still.
And on thy pale and peaceful face
    Is resting death's cold chill.
Thy hands are clasped upon thy breast,
    We've kissed thy lovely brow,
And in our aching hearts we know,
    We have no mother now.

    Notes:

    From Docket:

"Margaret Bothum's Grandparents were William and Priscilla Whittington, both of whose wills are in Princess Ann Courthouse."

"The Littleton Heritage" says Margaret is the daughter of Isaac J. Whittington.  This is in conflict with Marguerite Freeney's DAR line which indicates Margaret is the daughter of James Whittington.  As of February 2004 the DAR line is still "open", which I understand means no data has surfaced that brings the line into question.

The DAR line sources were Orphan's Court Records, a photostatic copy of an old diary, Somerset Co. Marriage Bonds, the 1850 census, and the Wills of William Whittington and his wife Priscilla .

    From Marguerite FREENEY Howard:

According to Marguerite FREENEY Howard from a letter written May 24, 1984 to a cousin in California (Jill Harding Prahm):

"Capt. William and Priscilla Whittington had a granddaughter named Margaret (Peggy) Whittington, who married Thomas Bothum (whom her grandparents disliked, according to the will).  Margaret and Thomas Bothum had a daughter named Anne Maria Whittington Bothum, who married John Selby Goslee.  They had 13 children.  Their daughter Emily Goslee married Thomas Barton Freeney"

    From Tim Pryor:

""The Littleton Heritage" does not mention if Issac J. Whittington served in the Revolution, but does mention his daughter Margaret marrying a William Botham. The following excerpt is on p. 22 of "The Littleton Heritage."

"Margaret Whittington, b. c1806; married 1st (lic. Som. 24 Apr 1824) WILLIAM BOTHAM, died 1835/40; 2nd (?Ky. 1841/50) WILLIAM PORTER; removed to Ky. (Lentz). In 1840, as Margaret Botham, she was enumerated in the Lower Dist. of Som. Co., with 4 girls (1 b. 1820/25; 2 b. 1825/30; 1 b. 1835-40)"

    From Docket:
