 | Elisabeth Brewington - Obituary Denton Journal, Denton, Maryland, 02 Apr 1898, Sat, Page 3
Death of an Estimable Woman
Not in many a year has there occurred in Denton a death which occasioned more widespread sorrow than that of Saturday last, when Mrs. Elizabeth E. Webster passed away.
The sad event was unexpected, and her husband, Rev. Z.H. Webster, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was until two days before attending Conference, then in session at Lewes. She grew rapidly worse, and, realizing the approach of death, spoke to her loving friends, who were always about her, and told them of her readiness to obey the Master's call. Amid her suffering her gentle spirit never faltered, and all her conversation eloquently bespoke the tranquility of her beautiful Christian character. Thus it was until the end came, shortly before noon, when all the neighborhood was overshadowed by the deepest gloom at the impending loss of a much loved one. With faltering words, in the closing moments of her earthly life, she said, doubtless with the coming light of the glorious beyond, "Death--Heaven!"
The announcement of her death was received with the keenest grief. In her church work she had gained a wide influence, and the instruction she gave in the Sunday School and in the Epwouth League meetings, and her most pleasing social accomplishments had attracted hosts of devoted friends. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon in the church, which was filled. Revs. Robert W. Todd, John D.C. Hanna and George L. Hardesty, representing the Conference, conducted the last sad rite. Rev. Mr. Todd read a Scriptural lesson, and the choir sang "Asleep in Jesus." Rev. Mr. Hanna offered a prayer touchingly beautiful, and this was followed by the singing of "Beckoning Hands." Rev. Mr. Hardesty read appropriate verses from the Bible, and then Mr. Hanna, who was the pastor of Mr. and Mrs. Webster before the former's entry into the ministry, addressed the congregation, paying a tender and feeling tribute, and there were few unmoistened eyes in the great assembly. Mr. Hardesty spoke very eloquently on the immortality of a Christian life, and Mr. Todd also spoke very feelingly.
The remains were taken to the cemetery, and the the presence of hundreds interment was made. Six young men, members of Mrs. Websters Sunday School class, were the pall-bearers. Among those who are bereaved are five small children. Mrs. Webster was a daughter of Mr. Henry Brewington, of Salisbury, and a sister of Rev. J.A. Brewington, of Lincoln, Del.

"Elisabeth H. Deveraux (Bettie) Elisabeth H. Deveraux (Bet-tie) passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 31, 2007 at the Masonic Home of Delaware after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence J. and Ruth W. Harrington of Wilmington, DE. Bettie was a graduate of Sanford School and Beacom College and worked for 30 years as a secretary in the Textile Fibers Department of the Dupont Company. She retired in 1971 to become a homemaker. She was a Life Member of the Dupont Coun try Club where she often played golf with her husband or her girlfriends. Bettie's favorite sport was bowling which she enjoyed for many years as a member of the Dupont Country Club Women's Bowling League. She especially appreciated the camaraderie of the league members. Failing health denied her that pleasure. She is survived by her husband, Harold D. of 58 years and her sister, Jean Miller of West Chester, PA. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Masonic Home of Delaware for their exceptional kindness and understanding in dealing with Bet-tie's illness. We also want to thank members of Heartland Hospice who assisted with her care during her final days. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of Bettie to the Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc. 110 Possum Hollow Rd.. Newark, DE 19711 or Sanford School P.O. Box 888, Hockes-sin, DE 19707-0888. Arrangements by CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY www.chandlerfuneralhome.com 302-478-7100"

 | Elizabeth Thompson Heard Gift from Betty Howell Traver who notes: "These silhouettes were cut at a fair in Brooklyn when granddaughter Elizabeth Thompson was in N.Y.C. visiting her grandparents James Daniel Brooks & Hannah (Sr.) ____. Eliz's parents Wm. Thompson & Hannah Brooks Thompson were in an area with poor schools. Daughter Eliz was writing such poorly spelled and grammatically incorrect letters to them in N.Y., they had her live with them [her grandparents] for a year to get an education. When she was 16 in the 1830's they went to the fair and their shilhouettes were cut by a famous silhouelletist "M. Honeywell" who was armless. The black paper was held by her toes while she operated scissors attached to a stand by her mouth."

 | Frederick and Sara Howard - Obituary Denton Journal, Denton, Maryland, 19 Dec 1925, Sat • Page 5
"The funeral of Mr. Frederick Howard, who died December 6th, after a lingering illness, was held at the home in Williston, on December 9th, and was largely attended. Rev. L. I. Tafel, of the New Church, spoke feelingly of the life and character of the deceased. Mr. Howard was born in England 77 years ago and came to the United States with his parents when a boy of 6. His family settled in Philadelphia and engaged in the manufacture of plush and other fabric. When a young man, Mr. Howard came to Caroline, where he married Miss Sarah Priscilla Andrews. Four children of the marriage survive -- Mr. John W. Howard, Mrs. William T. Love, Mrs. Edward B. Maloney and Mr. Frank Howard, of this county, and an adopted son, Mr. Harry Haskins, of New York. Two brothers. Mr. John Howard of Pennsylvania and Mr. James Howard of New Jersey, also survive. An only sister died in her youth. Interment was made in Federalsburg cemetery."
"On December 15th, Mrs. Sarah P. Howard, widow of Frederick Howard, who preceded her by only ten days, died at Williston, aged 73 years. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ager Andrews, who were Delawareans. She has two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lizzie Legates, of Federalsburg, and Mrs. C. T. White, of Philadelphia. Mrs Howard made many friends by her happy disposition. Se expressed a desire when her husband died not to stay here without him. 'So God took her.' Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from her home on Saturday, December 19th, at 1 o'clock. Interment will be made at Federalsburg."

PRETTY WEDDING OF DELMAR COUPLE Miss Sara M. Freeney Becomes Bride of William L Howard
Miss Sara Marguerite Freeney, the attractive young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barton Freeney, on Monday evening became the bride of William Lawrence Howard, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Howard, of Federalsburg. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Leonard White, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the bride's home. Miss Freeney was attended by her sister, Miss Kathleen Freeney, and the best man was Edward Pierce, of Federalsburg. Mrs. J. Fred Stevens played the wedding music and accompanied Mrs. Elizabeth Nabb, of Federalsburg, who sang "The Sweetest Story Ever Told." The bride wore a gown of white satin, tulle and lace, and carried a shower bouquet of bride's roses and valley lilies. Her hair was bound with tulle and orange blossoms and her slippers were of white satin. Miss Kathleen Freeney's frock was of orchid satin, and she carried delphinium and pink asters. The house was decorated with ferns, gladiolas and burning candles, and under an arc formed by the same decorations, the wedding was solemnized. Only the members of the immediate families and a very few personal friends were guests. Among those from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wright and Mrs. Nabb, of Federalsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Harrington, of Wilmington; Miss Katherine Tunnel, of Olney, Va.; Mrs. Isaac Brewington, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lowe. Miss Irene Harrell and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson, of Salisbury. After a wedding trip to Atlantic City, Mr. and Mrs. Howard will be at home at 903 State street, after October 1. Mr. Howard is an instructor in the Delmar Maryland High School and the bride graduated at that school last June.

 | Gertude MacMichael "the girl" - "Sacrifice of the Shannon" (Photo appears before title page)
Caption: "She had evidently been gazing into the flames, as we all love to do at times, and she looked up as we went in."
Gertrude MacMichael - Hickman's fictional(?) heroine, and the target of the affection of the books two friends, Captain Ashburn and the mysterious and highly capable Mr. Wilson.
Ashburn (p2): "Another reason I want to tell you the story is that the girl is a wonder, a living wonder, and I know you'll be interested in her, though some women have expressed their interest in queer ways which were not always intended to be complementary. If you analyzed them you usually found that they were complementary if they were anything, no matter what they were intended to be. I've called the girl a wonder, because though if you take the average girl as your criterion she is far away from it, still, from a cool, unbiased, critical point of view, she is normal, - thoroughly normal. Kindly remember that "normal" is not "average." She's got a circulation that swings a crimson flush in under her sun-tanned cheeks. She walks like a tiger, and looks at a thing or a person, not for the effect of her eyes, but to see. Incidentally she gets the effect a thousand times better than if she tried for it."
