James L. Payne - Curious death from excitement
James L. Payne - Curious death from excitement
Evening Star, Tuesday, Dec 20, 1881, Washington (DC), DC, Page:2

"A Curious Death From Excitement - Special correspondence of the Baltimore Gazette from Denton, Caroline county, Md., December 19. says:-- A sad death occurred in the fourth election district on Thursday night last. John Blanch, aged 60, and his son carried on a farm for Mr. James L. Payne. They had an unsettled account and met at a public sale, where a dispute arose between the parties, which resulted in a fight. Payne struck young Blanch with a club, when the elder Blanh threw a stone at Payne, stunning him, but on his recovery he attacked his assailant, grappling him. Blanch became suddenly speechless (apparently from anger) and sank limp and almost lifeless to the ground. He was carried home and died the next day. A post-mortem examination was held, and after a thorough investigation by Drs. George and Hignutt, a verdict was returned that the death was not the result of wounds or blows, but from over-excitement caused by the affray."

John Edward Howell letter to his son Spencer at Kent.
John Edward Howell letter to his son Spencer at Kent.
John Edward Howell (Jack) letter to his son - J. Spencer Howell (Spencer). 15 Feb, 1945 from Buenos Aires. A gem, providing much insight to Jack's exceptional personality and intelligence.

Jack and family are now living in Argentina, but Spencer, now age 16, has been sent to the Kent School in Kent, CT to receive a proper education. Kent's motto: "Simplicity of Life, Directness of Purpose, and Self-Reliance"

The letter is a response to Spencer's complaints about the bad behavior of the other boys at Kent, the bad food and lack of attention exhibited by the staff toward an injured boy named Peter. (I assume this is not Spencer's younger brother Peter, age 10)

The third paragraph begins "There comes a time in everyone's life when one begins to realize that things are not really either completely black or completely white and that, on the contrary, the truly black and truly white things are the exception rather than the rule."

Jack closes with "Spencer, old boy, this has been a long letter but it had to be, because I had a lot of things to tell you. Keep a stiff upper lip and your hand straight and remember 'bien faire et laisser dire'."

Its literal meaning: Do well and let (them) speak. What it really means: Do your work well and never mind the critics.

To clarify some of the references in the letter: "Granny" is Jack's mother in law Flora Maude Campbell (a.k.a. Granny Stone.) "Chatham" is Chatham, Ontario, Canada - home of Flora Maude. "Father Chalmers" is the headmaster of Kent School.

John Frederick 'Jack' Hickman
John Frederick "Jack" Hickman
Gunner Hickman was inadvertently killed by a stray bullet during the Kinmel Park Camp Riot (called "The Kinmel Park Mutiny") of 4/5 March 1919, which took place in Rhyl, Denbighshire, Wales. Five Canadian soldiers lost their lives during this riot.
Gunner Hickman was the only soldier whose remains were returned to Canada for interment.

From novelist/journalist Noel Barber’s 1975 book, ‘Gallant Protestors’:-
“The mutineers were our own men, stuck in the mud of North Wales, waiting impatiently to get back to Canada – four months after the end of the war. The 15,000 Canadian troops that concentrated at Kinmel didn’t know about the strikes that held up the fuelling ships and which had caused food shortages. The men were on half rations, there was no coal for the stove in the cold grey huts, and they hadn’t been paid for over a month. Forty-two had slept in a hut meant for thirty, so they each took turns sleeping on the floor, with one blanket each.”
