|
|
519 |
 | Alfred Grunberger in Bridgewater, NS From a photo album belonging to Louise S. Davison "Lou" and her sister Alma M. Davison "Allie". This photo was untitled, facing a photo on the opposite page of who is believed to be Nellie Davison. The date could be about 1922 based on Catherine Leavitt's remarks about remembering that Nellie and "The Baron" (Grunberger) visited Bridgewater and attended a dinner party at Frank Davison's house when Catherine was a young girl. (Frank Davison is the father of Lou and Allie mentioned above) A newspaper article in 1922 also reports that Nellie and Grunberger visited Canada in 1922. In the summer of 1922 Nellie was 41, Mr. Gruenberger was 46, and Catherine Doran Davison Leavitt was 12. (Hal Lathrop collection.)

 | Alma Minora Hickman Drawing on display at the Hickman family reunion 2005. Original is approx 18"x 18".
Several large (18" x 18" or so) and beautifully framed antique photos & drawings were placed next to the entrance of the large tent that Judy and Marlene had erected for the Hickman family reunion in 2005. Up until this time, I had not seen an image of Alma.
We have no absolute evidence that this image is of Alma - - but there is much evidence:
a) There are photos of others in Joseph Hickman's family that are labeled - so this could be Alma by process of elimination.
b) There is another photo of equal size of Alma's sister Caroline Clifford "Cliffey" Hickman Bequith.
c) The unusually large size of the photos and their similarity of framing is another hint - the Hickmans independently lost both Caroline Clifford (d. 4 Dec 1884 in Dorchester, NB) and Alma (d. 2 Dec 1884 in Bridgewater, NS) when both died within two days of each other.
d) These images were originally displayed in the Joseph Hickman House where the girls grew up.
e) And finally, a separate image (photograph) of the same woman was found in a photo album (on loan from the Keillor House Museum for the 2005 reunion). Somone prior to receipt of the album by the museum has written above the photo 'Alma Hickman".
To settle this we need to look through the Davison family photos and see if we see this Alma. If she is there, that will settle any doubts.

 | Baudouin 'le Begue' de Lannoy by Jan van Eyck - 1437 (source: George English)
Notes from the "Introduction to Valois Burgundy" article prepared by the Art History Department of the University of New York:
"The figure wears the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This figure seems more elderly than the rest. Dubois ("La scčne de présentation...," in Cockshaw, Les Chroniques de Hainaut, p. 123 n. 10) makes the tentative identification of this figure as Baudouin de Lannoy, lord of Molembais (c. 1388-1474). A portrait by Jan van Eyck has been identified as likeness of Baudoin. In this portrait the figure is shown wearing the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece and holds in his right hand the staff signifying membership in the court of the Duke of Burgundy."

 | Campbell Flour Mill Tower - Close-up. Notes from The Iron Age (Chilton), Volume 98 Sept. 14, 1916, p. 595, "The water tank of the Campbell Flour Mills Company, Ltd, Toronto, Ont., takes the form of a gigantic bag of flour built entirely of steel but shaped and painted to look like a filled bag. The tank holds 40,000 gal. of water and stands 152 ft. above the foundations on a structural steel framework which brings the tank in a conspicuous position, rendering it peculiarly effective for advertising purposes. The bag itself is 37 ft. deep and 18 ft. wide and the total weight supported is over 200 tons. The tank was provided for a sprinkler system and was designed and built by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, Bridgeburg, Ont."

 | Capt. Ashburn - Sacrifice of the Shannon A photo from "Sacrifice of the Shannon", by W. Albert Hickman. My guess is that Hickman took this photo himself - and it is of the Captain on the icebreaker "Minto" which Hickman served on.
Caption: "Storms that kept the Liffey's Captain peering anxiously into the snow ahead for hours at a time."

 | Charles R. Umlauf Not sure who the baby is. If taken cir 1911 it could be his daughter Dorothy b. 1909 d. 1913. The cars in the photo however look circa 1926 vintage, so the baby could be his grand daughter Jane Carter b. 1927. We obtained the photo from Jane Evelyn Carter.

 | Daniel James Brooks Betty Howell Traver collection. Betty H. Traver notes: "These silhouettes were cut at a fair in Brooklyn when granddaughter Elizabeth Thompson was in N.Y.C. visiting her grandparents Daniel James Brooks & Hannah (Sr.) ____. Eliz's parents Wm. Thompson & Hannah Brooks Thompson were in an area with poor schools. Daughter Eliz was writing such poorly spelled and grammatically incorrect letters to them in N.Y., they had her live with them [her grandparents] for a year to get an education. When she was 16 in the 1830's they went to the fair and their silhouettes were cut by a famous silhouelletist "M. Honeywell" who was armless. The black paper was held by her toes while she operated scissors attached to a stand by her mouth."

 | Dr. Fitig Grunberger and John E. Howell Photo cir. 1912. (estimating John E. Howell's age at 10.) If Dr. Fitig Grunberger is 65 in the photo, he was born circa 1847. Alfred Grunberger was born Oct 1875, when Fitig was 28 - so Fitig could be the father of Alfred. (J. Spencer Howell collection.)
