"The first known instance of Cornelius Johnson's appearance in the records of Colonial Maryland was in 1672 when he immigrated to Maryland with his wife Barbara and daughters Mary & Barbara. They were listed as being "of Somerset county" in that year. (The Early Settlers of Maryland, by Gust Skordas, pub. 1979, p.259 [Maryland patents Lib. 16 fol. 592] )"

"Cornelius Johnson (late servant of Thomas Savage) presented in Northampton County, Virginia, February, 1662/3, for adultery with Alice Baily (whom he has since married), and March, 1662/3, fined 500 pounds tobacco for incontenency before marriage (Northampton Court,Order Book, 1661-4, pp. 161 and 167).
Cornelius Johnson appears in Somerset in 1666 and in June, 1672, January, 1676, and December, 1684, purchased "Sweetwood" and "Mannings Resolution" tracts (adjoining), onn. side Great Monie Creek, the former from Charles Ballard and Sarah,his wife (widow of John Elzey, decd.); the latter from John Manningand Sara, his wife. Cornelius Johnson, by will prob. June 17, 1687,devised to Margaret, daughter of William Jones, personalty, and residue of his estate to William Jones, Jr., and Daniel Jones (at 18years of age) and their heirs (Md. Cal. Wills, II, p. 19; see also post, Jones of Monie)."
Cornelius lived on lands near Monie Bay. Others in Monie were: Nehemiah Covington and his family; Thomas Covington; Henry Hayman and his family; John Painter (or Panter); John Waller; William Jones; Robert Ingram.
Cornelius Johnson and Henry Hayman were appraisers in the " Inventory of all the goods and Cattle of David Williams and Jane, his wife of ye County of Somerset in the Province of Maryland lately Murthered by the Indians Appraised by us whose names are hereunto subscribed the twentieth Day of April Annoqr Domini 1678 ..." The appraised articles consisting of cattle, clothing, household goods, with a sole an onlybook "1 Old Bible," amounted to 10,793 pounds of tobacco. [5, 7, 8]
