Howard, 13 July 1965: Dear Lawrence and Mutt, Macy came yesterday P.M. and we went to Denton to look at the chairs and talked to Wilbert Merrikens about the family back ground. He didn't know any farther back than I did only one thing that there was more than one Isaiah Blades - the one he knew was Isaiah Connelly Blades, so my mother's mother was Julia Blades (born 1855) oldest child of Isaiah C. Blades who married J. L. Payne and died when she was 24 or 26 yrs old leaving 3 children - Frank, JIm and Annie (my mother) who was the youngest about 3-4 or 5 years old. Her grand parents the Blades took her until she was about 12 or 10 when her grandmother died and she had to go home to her father and step mother. We cand cannot or guess from 1855 her mother would be 25 years before that and I guess her father would have been 25 or 30 years before that which I guess would be back to near 1800. The Rev. war was 1776 so it seem that there must be a Blades back of Isaiah. The Choptank Blades didn't know but one thing more and had heard her family say there was a Joe Blades back. Neither of them knew Isaiah's wifes maiden name. Wilbert said maybe Reyer Dukes could tell us more as Esther was a D.A.R. So Mary said she would try and get an appointment with Dukes he may know from Esther whos grandmother Isaiah Blades wife was. This is all I could find out. Mother.

  Nora and her brother William married brother and sister John and Hannah Howard. After her husband died, she moved in with her mother (Annie) until Annie died. Mother. Obituary notes: The Daily Times, Salisbury, Maryland 9 March 1973 p. 13 "Mrs. J. W. Howard. FEDERALSBURG - Mrs. Lenora Love Howard, 92, formerly of nearby American Corners, died Thursday in the Willoughby Care Home here. Mrs. Howard had been in failing health. She was born in Caroline County, a daughter of the late William Love and Annie Love Langrell. Her husband, John W. Howard, died in 1937. Surviving are a son Dr. William L. Howard, Salisbury; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond A. Magee, Ocean City; five grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held here Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Frampton Funeral Home.  The Rev. Harrel W. Pitsenbarger of Union United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery here...." [10, 11] Story: Lynn Howard Howell remembers that she and her cousing Nancy Magee visited Grandmother Howard, (Lenora Love Howard) at her farm in American Corner when they were young girls. (cir. 1940). Lenora was very strict with the girls. One of the things that stood out to Lynn was that the house had no running water, no electricity and no plumbing. Lynn remembers going upstairs to bed by kerosene lamp and having chamber pots in the bedroom. The beds were very comfy and warm however. The lack of any modern infrastructure was a reminder of how difficult farm life was for many even in 1940. Lynn also remembers that Grandmother Howard allowed she and Nancy to go into the town of American Corner by themselves to buy candy.
