Notes from the "Introduction to Valois Burgundy" article prepared by the Art History Department of the University of New York:
"The figure wears the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This figure seems more elderly than the rest. Dubois ("La scène de présentation...," in Cockshaw, Les Chroniques de Hainaut, p. 123 n. 10) makes the tentative identification of this figure as Baudouin de Lannoy, lord of Molembais (c. 1388-1474). A portrait by Jan van Eyck has been identified as likeness of Baudoin. In this portrait the figure is shown wearing the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece and holds in his right hand the staff signifying membership in the court of the Duke of Burgundy." |
