      John Edwin Stone, superannuated three years ago as license inspector for South Essex, died at his home in Essex this morning after a protracted period of ill-health.

      Mr. Stone was 73 years old, and one of the best known residents in the county, having at one time held the office of warden, and mayor of Essex.

      Born at Highgate, Mr. Stone located in Essex more than 40 years ago taking a keen interest in the commercial and political affairs of the community.  For many years, he conducted an implement store in Essex, and soon became widely known throughout the county.

      He was successful in obtaining the mayoralty in Essex several years ago; and also held office as wardeen of the county, besides serving as a county councillor and a town councillor.  During his term of office several important improvements were carried out which earned him the reputation of being a capable administrator both in county and municipal affairs.

      His term as license inspector in South Essex extended over a period of 15 years.  Since he was superannuated 3 years ago his health has been failing.  His death occurred at 7:30 a.m. today.

      Mr. Stone was widely known in fraternal circles, although during the past few years he had not been active in any particular lodge owing to his health.  In religion, Mr. Stone as a staunch member of the Essex United Church.

      Mr. Stone's wife pre-deceased him a year ago last August.  Surviving are two daughters, Margaret and Alena of Essex, and six sons, Lynde of Woborn, Mass.; Cecil of Stacey, Minn.; Edwin Stanley of London, Ont.; George of Greenfield, Mass.; Wilmot of Prescott, Ont.; and Whitney of Essex.
