Story:
- John Spencer Howell "Spence" (1929 -2017) was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He was the eldest of three sons born to John Edward Howell (1902 - 1948, born Demorest, Georgia,) and Elizabeth Louise Stone (1905 - 1972, born Chatham, Ontario, Canada.)
Education: Spence attended elementary school at the Saint John's School in San Juan, Puerto Rico and at the American Grammar & High School in Belgrano, Argentina. He graduated from high school in 1948 from the Kent School, Kent, Connecticut. In 1952 he graduated from Johns Hopkins University (B.A., Biology.) At Johns Hopkins he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary society.
Languages: Spence had an amazing facility with languages. He spoke American English and many Spanish dialects as if a native. He was also fluent in Italian and Portuguese which he learned by ear as an adult.
Military service: In 1952 Spence enlisted in the US Army. He attained the rank of Second Lieutenant, serving in the 3rd Army Armored Division until 1954 as a Personnel Staff Officer in Ft. Knox, Kentucky and in Ft. Benning, Georgia. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Pharmaceutical industry executive: Spence spent most of his career in the international pharmaceutical business.
Pharmaceuticals, Inc., - In 1953, after a short stint as a management trainee in Manhattan, Spence was assigned to Buenos Aires, Argentina as an administrative assistant, then promoted to a sales rep, then promoted to regional sales manager based in the city of Córdoba. In 1957 he became General Manager of Pfizer Chile, working in Santiago, Chile. In 1960 he was promoted to General Manager, Pfizer SA in Madrid, Spain. This was the first foreign investment allowed in Spain under the regime of Francisco Franco.
International - In 1962 Spencer joined Olin International as Assistant to the CEO in Manhattan. In 1964 he was assigned to Rome, Italy as the founding President of Winchester Italia SpA , Winchester's first step into the World market place.
Home Products - Wyeth International Division- In 1970 Spencer joined Wyeth where he was promoted to Group Vice President for Latin America. In 1984 through 1987 Spence served as President of the Ayerst International Division.
Hospitality industry entrepreneur: During 1968 and 1969 Spence and a business partner built and operated "La Playa", a five-star beachfront resort hotel in Naples, Florida. In 1990, during retirement, Spence invested and operated a Dairy Queen restaurant franchise in Savannah, Georgia.
Family - Spence was married twice. In 1953 he married Cara Lynn Howard of Salisbury, Maryland. They had three sons: John Spencer, David Barton and Thomas Stone. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1972 he married Claire McConeghy. They had two sons: Joseph Scott and Christian Frederick.
Community: Spence served as President of the Skidaway Island Rotary Club in 2000 to 2001. He was a member of St Peter's Episcopal Church, Skidaway Island, Georgia where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden.
