- Ellen Smart email to JSH 13 May 2020 notes:
"We found it fascinating that Matilda was 19 when she left Tavistock for Darlington. She married Erastus Burk less than a year later. We wonder what her connection to Darlington was before she left Tavistock, why she went to Darlington, and how she and he met." [23]

John I have a marriage date of about 1842 for Erastus and Mathilda. They possibly were married in Leeds Ontario. but no proof as of yet. Now there is also an Erasuts Burk son of Jessiah (Josiah)Jessie Burk who married Mary Brady. Jessie and Mary were married about 1839 probably in the Darlington area. This Erastus is buried in the Bowmanville cemetery. This Erastus was born betwwen 1849-1855 and died on the 24 August 1921 or 1927. Below is what was sent to me from Graham Stewart: I hope some of this info helps out.
ERASTUS AND MAGGIE BURK
by Harry Douglas Stewart
Hardly could I close this little account of our Burk forebears without some reference to a delightful old couple with whom, I think, all of "them kids of Harry" were familiar. Maggie Metcalf, who lived brightly for 88 years, was, I suspect, a daughter of another pioneer family whose farm was adjacent to the Burk holdings (see Tremain's Map with the spelling Medcalf). Erastus Burk was the older brother to our grandmother Sarah Burk. Maggie Metcalf (or Medcalf) was 13 years younger than Erastus but she was just about the same age as grandmother. Could it be that she was a close friend of Sarah Burk when Erastus began to take note of her?
Erastus and Maggie inherited what came to be known as the east farm. On this farm there was an extended frame house on which there was a long verandah. During the War of 1812, this house was a resting place for the troops of the Upper Canada Militia that patrolled the shore of the lake as a vigilante lest an invasion by the Americans should be attempted. During the tenure of Maggie and Erastus, this house became the lounge and dining centre of a successful tourist operation that they managed with the renowned cuisine that was provided by their daughters Florence (Flo) and Mary Anne (Birdie). I have met people from disparate parts of Ontario who have spoken of wonderful vacations they had experienced frequently at the Lakeside Summer Resort.
The James Burk homestead has been farmed by the descendants of James for 193 years now. Erastus, son of Jesse and grandson of James died in 1921, leaving no living son. His two daughters, Mrs. Blake Short earlier and Mrs. Garnet Symons later, occupied the farm until it was sold to the St. Maryts Cement Company in 1969. An agreement with this firm was drawn up to grant permission to the present occupant, Mr. Frank Symons, to remain on the farm with his family so long as he may live. Last fall I visited this west farm under the guidance of Mr. Leroy Short (a grandson of "Maggie and Ras") from which we looked off toward the old east farm where all of the old buildings have been razed.
The tombstones of our forebears that could be found and were decipherable were carefully removed from the old farms by the St. Maryts Cement people to the Bowmanville-Newcastle Cemetery. Ontario Hydro has fenced a small burial plot on the Darlington Site and visitors to the site can obtain permission to visit these few historic graves if they wish to see them. John Burk, his wife Jane, and all their 13 children are buried in this plot.
