      Notes from "The Lanes", by Aude E. Lane of Indiana:

      "He was the "High Sheriff" of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Colonel Joseph Lane, "High Sheriff", after coming to North Carolina, lived in Bertie County for awhile and was a vestryman of the North West Parish of that County, in 1727, being recorded as "Joseph Lane, Sr." on the Parish register. His father was Thomas Lane, who took out a land grant in Surrey Co., Virginia in 1682."
