      Memory Sutherland Johnson, 94, a Charter Resident of Vernon Woods, LaGrange, passed away at her home on Friday May 22, 2015. She was born February 20, 1921 in Oxford, Michigan, daughter of William Benjamin Sutherland and Beatrice Marie Thomas. She grew up in Miami, Fla.; Charleston, S. C.; and New York City, N.Y. where she graduated from Washington Irving High School. As a young girl, she began coming to LaGrange, the hometown of her stepmother, Julia Corless Sutherland. Following her graduation from LaGrange College in 1943, she enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II. She married Capt. (later Major) Forrest C. Johnson, Jr. in 1944 and they moved to LaGrange, his hometown, at the end of the war. She received her Master's degree from West Georgia College and taught 20 years in the Troup County School System, serving as Principal of Oak Grove and Chairman of the Social Studies Department of Troup High School. After retirement, she was the first woman to serve on the Troup County Board of Health and the first woman Chairman of the Board of Health, where the board room was named in her honor in 2008. She served on the Board of Trustees for LaGrange Memorial Library, was a founding officer of the Chattahoochee Valley Art Association (now LaGrange Art Museum) and was a founding member of the Troup County Historical Society. She served as President of the Woman's Club of LaGrange, of the Pine Needle Garden Club, and of the Elms and Roses Garden Council, and was a member of the Tabard Book Club. She was active in Alumni affairs at LaGrange College and led several fund raising campaigns, including the Margin of Distinction, and was a founder of a memorial scholarship to her husband in 1980. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and former member of the United Daughters of the War of 1812, the Daughters of Indian Wars, Colonial Dames, and Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims. She has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange for 75 years, joining in 1940, where she served in many capacities including President of the United Methodist Women and Chair of the Altar Guild. She was a volunteer at City-County Hospital and West Georgia Medical Center and the American Red Cross. She was a charter member of Georgia Beta Iota Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. She was a Rotarianne Emerita of the Rotary Club of LaGrange.

      Mrs. Johnson is survived by four children: Randall Johnson Watts and her husband, John, of Lynchburg, Va.; Memory "Dee" Johnson Wallace; Forrest Clark Johnson, III and his wife, Deborah; and Thomas Sutherland Johnson all of LaGrange; one brother, Dr. John Clark Sutherland of Wading River, N.Y. and Harris Co., Ga.; one sister-in-law, Jo Ann Paul Hopkins of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Charles Burris Johnson, II and his wife, Betty, of LaGrange; and one sister-in-law, who was also a childhood friend, Dorothy W. Sutherland Musselmann of Bethlehem, Pa.; eight grandchildren: Memory "Ree" Wallace Snellgrove and her husband, Bill, of LaGrange; Jessica Johnson Moorhead and her husband, Brooks, of Franklin Springs; Anne A. Wallace of Birmingham, Ala.; Catherine Dunson Watts of Washington, D. C.; Elizabeth Forrest "Libba" Watts of Lynchburg, Va.; Forrest C. Johnson, IV and his wife, Shannon, of Manchester; Albert Drake Watts, II, and his wife, Jessica, of Lynchburg, Va.; Christian Ferguson Sutherland Dunson Johnson and his wife, Skye, of Midland. Six great grandchildren: Memory Riley Snellgrove and William Drake Snellgrove of LaGrange; John Albert Watts, III of Lynchburg, Va.; Geneva Grace Moorhead and Daniel Brooks Moorhead, III of Franklin Springs; and Hardy O'Gwynn Gavin-Harris of Manchester; four nephews: Andrew F. Sutherland; Gregory Kent Johnson; Edgar Dunson Johnson, Jr.; and Donald Harvey Johnson; and three nieces: Gina Souza Sutherland; Katie Johnson Wallace and her husband, James; and Lucy Wright Johnson Westmoreland. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her son-in-law, Charles M. Wallace; three brothers: Andrew D. Sutherland, Col. William B. Sutherland, Jr., and Gilbert B. Hopkins, Jr.; one nephew, Maj. William B. Sutherland, III; and one niece, Helen Sledge Johnson.

      The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday May 25 in the Fellowship Hall of First Methodist Church, and the funeral service will be at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church followed by the burial in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
