Notes |
- Bill Boyer notes:
Often said that her ancestry was "Scots-Irish" - and usually in the same sentence "my husband has no idea who his are - probably indians for all we know!"
She worked in the Philadelphia school system during the depression.
JSH Notes:
She is baptized Mary Elizabeth Carlin. In many records she appears as Elizabeth Mary Carlin. Her family and friends called her Bess.
According to Wikipedia "Scots-Irish" is is a term usually refering to Americans of Ulster-Scots descent. Almost all Scots-Irish were Protestant (of which 70% were Presbyterians), whose families originated mainly in the Lowlands of Scotland and in the Scottish Border Country (with England). The Scots-Irish migrated to the Ulster province of Northern Ireland in the late 17th and 18th centuries. When they migrated to North America in the 1700's most settled in the Appalachian regions, the Ohio Valley, New England, and north-central Nova Scotia.
