  • Notes
    • Wendy Smythe notes:

This information was provided by my Mother.

Bill Carlin ( son of John) joined the Navy at 16 yrs. old. He left the Navy in 1938 and returned in 1940.  The housekeeper signed for him to go into the Navy as he was under age.  He would not go to school.

He was single until WWll, when he married Mabel in 1941. The picture of him indicated that it was his first anniversary with Mabel and that he was in Beauford, S. Carolina.

He died in Florida in the1970's according to Dolores Stevenson.

Wendy Smythe Notes rcd Dec 2018:

William heard the call to action while a school boy. He was so anxious to serve in the Navy that he persuaded his housekeeper to sign for him to enlist in the Navy at age 16. He enlisted in 1910 and served through 1938. Retirement from the Navy did not appeal to him and it is documented that he entered the Navy again in 1941  serving during WWll. The sleeve stripes indicate he was in the Navy twenty plus years at the time of the photo.

His father, Army Captain John Carlin had a major responsibility for the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia.

His mother was deceased since 1905 leaving 12 year old William and his 4 siblings in the care of his housekeeper.

The family lived on the campus of the Army Arsenal where it  were busy supplying the army with munitions. William was surrounded by and influenced with military life.

It is no surprise that William was awarded the US Navy Life Saving Medal from the Secretary of the Navy. The inscription on the Medal was "To William  Carlin for Bravely Rescuing a Shipmate from Drowning."

"The action was described:"A man in attempting to disembark from a motor boat onto the gangway of the USS Aroostock fell into the water.  Carlin who was in charge of the boat, without hesitation jumped overboard and assisted the imperiled man laden with a coat and handbag, against a strong ebb tide to the gangway."  He also has a plaque on the USS Olympia, a historical landmark tied up in the Philadelphia river front area, for having gone over board and saving a man's life.

William served on 3 ships overseas from 1916- to 1919.The USS Sacramento was the ship that took him into the first world  war (1916-1918).
WW2 placed him  in foreign service from May 1943 -1944 for 14 months. He also  served 26 months in domestic areas when he reentered service in 1940, wanting to assist in the war effort once again.

He was  back in the Navy about 1940 as a lst class Aviation Machinist Mate. He was then assigned to the USS Princeton, a aircraft carrier that was part to the fast carrier group. Interestingly, his nephew, Bill Boyer served on the same ship just prior to and again after his Uncle William.William was on that ship about a year and got off of it before it was struck by a Kamiakaze. Many men were killed. When he left the Princeton he was about 52 years old which is quite old to be going to sea.

His career devotion forestalled marriage until 1941 to Mabel. The back of his picture says  "To Mabel for our 3rd Anniversary in Beaufort, South Carolina from Bill.
