    This would be the grandson of Ellen and D Wilbert Douglas - As I typed it I was noting the same interests and connections he had to many of his Hickman cousins of the early 1900's generations....I wondered if they knew each other and if they were aware they were cousins......
    Amherst Daily News - Friday September 7, 1983:
    "Former town councillor and well known Amherstonian John William (Bill) Douglas died suddenly Thursday morning at his summer residence at Tidnish Cove. He resided here at 190 Victoria Street East. Mr. Douglas was born in Amherst in 1914, the son of the late J H and Helen (Pipes) Douglas. He received his early education in the Amherst School system, attended the University of Kings College, and graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in law in 1939. He then joined the army, reaching the rank of mayor. He served overseas and was wounded on D-1, the day after D-Day. He returned to Amherst in 1945 where he practiced law in partnership with E C Hicks until 1961. He served as Crown Prosecutor for a time. Mr. Douglas was appointed a Queen's Council in 1960. In 1961 he went to Ottawa with the Department of Justice. He retired as director of legal services for the Unemployment Insurance Commission in 1978 and returned to Amherst in 1979. Mr. Douglas was a commanding officer of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders militia, an honorary member Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10, Amherst, and a member of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Memory Club. He was chairman of the committee which built the new legion hall. SERVED TOWN: He served on town council from 1947-1048, was past president of the Amherst Rotary Club, and founding president of the Amherst United Way. He was very active in the Childrens Aid Society and the St. John Ambulance Association. Mr. Douglas was past master of the Alexandra Lodge #87 AF and AM and was chairman of the committee which built the Masonic Temple. He was a member of Christ Church and an active member of the choir there. He was a member of the Amherst Golf Club and the Amherst Curling Club. Mr. Douglas is survived by his wife, the former Edith Anne Jardine; one son, John William of Toronto; tow daughters, Dr Helen Douglas and Carrie anne (Mrs. R G Bova); one cousin, E N Rhodes, all of Ottawa; and two nephews, R C Douglas of Halifax and J H Douglas of Fort Myers, Florida. He was predeceased by two brothers, Hugh and Colin. The remains are resting at Campbell's Funeral Hiome....a Masonic Service will be held .....The funeral will be held at Christ Church at 11 AM Saturday with Father David S Myles officiating. Burial will at at Amherst Cemetery. Donations to the Nova Scotia Heart Fund would be appreciated."
