      The Dal Riadan Scots 563

The Dal Riadan Scots came from the Irish coast of Antrim and, after a period of migration established a kingdom in the west of Scotland. Some claim this migration began as early as 250AD. As their cousins in Ireland were converted, the Irish Sea link carried the word of Christ to the Scots and St Columba founded a monastery on Iona in 563. This was to become the ancient burial place for the Scottish kings.

In time, the Scots were converted to Christianity and the conversion of the Picts followed. Columba was not the first to attempt to Christianise the inhabitants of North Britain. Two generations earlier, St Ninian had worked among the southern Picts and had founded a stone church at Whithorn in Galloway.
