James L. Payne - Curious death from excitement

Evening Star, Tuesday, Dec 20, 1881, Washington (DC), DC, Page:2

"A Curious Death From Excitement - Special correspondence of the Baltimore Gazette from Denton, Caroline county, Md., December 19. says:-- A sad death occurred in the fourth election district on Thursday night last. John Blanch, aged 60, and his son carried on a farm for Mr. James L. Payne. They had an unsettled account and met at a public sale, where a dispute arose between the parties, which resulted in a fight. Payne struck young Blanch with a club, when the elder Blanh threw a stone at Payne, stunning him, but on his recovery he attacked his assailant, grappling him. Blanch became suddenly speechless (apparently from anger) and sank limp and almost lifeless to the ground. He was carried home and died the next day. A post-mortem examination was held, and after a thorough investigation by Drs. George and Hignutt, a verdict was returned that the death was not the result of wounds or blows, but from over-excitement caused by the affray."
