Howard M. Miller - Obituary

"Howard M. Miller, Jr. Of Conistan, Kennett Square, PA, died on Sunday August 6, 2000 at the Crazier Medical Center, Upland, PA. He was the husband of Jean Harrington Miller with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. Born in Knoxville, TN, he was a son of the late Howard M. Miller and Katie Johnson Miller. Mr. Miller completed both his undergraduate and graduate work in psychology and personnel administration at the University of Tennessee before joining the DuPont Company. He was in employee relations management with the DuPont Company from 1940-1974. During this period he had experience in five departments. He was active in DuPont's atomic energy efforts, being responsible for recruitment for the Hanford Plutonium Plant and as assistant to the Project Manager for the construction of the Savannah River Project. For nine years, he was Personnel Relations Manager for the company's Engineering Department, and beginning in 1963 lived in Geneva, Switzerland, as Personnel Manager for DuPont's European operations where he remained until 1970. From then. until 1974 he was a manager in the corporate Personnel Division with responsibility for providing consultation on and assistance in the manning and utilization of professional and managerial employ- 66S. Mr. Miller has prepared numerous papers on organization planning and development, human resource management, especially the management of technical and scientific personnel, and a wide range of subjects in the field of personnel administration. These papers have been presented to national and international meetings including those of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Society for the Advancement of Management in the United States, the Society of Chemical Industry in the United Kingdom, the European Federation of Chemical Engineers, and the International University Contract for Management Education in Europe. He has also lectured at numerous universities in the United States and Europe. He was a member of the American Association for Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Political and Social Science. During 1 967-70, he was a director of the European Employee Relations Council. In retirement, Mr. Miller was vice president of US operations with Management Counselors International S.A. of Brussels, Belgium. In recent years, he had worked with the Kennett Area United Way and the Brandywine Branch of the American Red Cross. He served on the Board of the Kennett Square Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Kennett Planning Commission. Surviving in addition to his wife are: 2 sisters, Dorothy Hardin of Lebanon, Illinois and Louise Her-rell of Powell, Tennessee; 1 brother, David T. Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee. Also surviving are nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph H. Miller. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service 11 a.m. on Saturday August 12, 2000 in the William Penn Room, Crosslands, Kennett Square, PA. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the United Way of the Kennett Area, P.O. Box 362, Kennett Square, PA 19348 or the Kennett Area Senior Center, 427 S.
