Matilda Turner

 Turner -> Burk -> Campbell -> Stone -> Howell

Still trying to find more on Matilda Turner of Tavistock, Devon, England.

Matilda is the mother of Mirrette Burk and grandmother of Flora Maude Campbell Stone (our Granny Stone). She appears in the 1861 Canadan Census, Harwich, Kent County, Ontario as “Matlilda Burk, born England, age 37”.

She also appears in the 1880 US Census in Alameda, California as “M. Burke, White, Female, Age 58, wife, married, b. England, father and mother b. England”

The 1841 England Census shows 4 Turner’s listed in Tavistock: Matilda Turner, F, age 15, b. Devon; Mary Turner, F, age 60, b. outside census county; John Turner,m, age 55, Farmer, b. Devon; Jane Turner, F, age 15, female servant, b. Devon.

Our Matilda could be the one listed in the England Census age 15 (so born cir 1826) but there is no way to tell until we surface more.

John Edward Howell ‘s Immigrant Ancestors

I’ve recently discovered more “Immigrant Ancestors” of John Edward Howell (1903-1948).

This new group is from his mother, Nellie Davison’s side, who along with several generations before her, were born in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Going back further we find that many of the Nova Scotia ancestors descended from English immigrants that sailed from England and Holland to America on ships like the “Mayflower” the “Fortune”, the “Anne”, and the “Little James”.

Freeney connection to Wales and England

William The Conqueror->Beauclerc->Platagenent->Gray->Kynaston->Thornes->Littleton ->Whittington->Bothum->Goslee->Freeney

It’s always fun to make a breakthrough from an “Immigrant Ancestor” back to his country of birth. It’s even more fun if you can continue the line back in the birth country. In the last few days I’ve connected the Freeney line back to Wales via Nathaniel LITTLETON who was born in Henley, Shropshire County, Wales. As a bonus, his line in Wales is documented back to the year 1000.

I was able to find quite a few notes on many of the individuals in this line, which appear at the end of each persons record — probably worth a quick read…for example: Eleanor Cobham tried for wichcraft and treason, orAntigone the bastard child of Humphrey Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester.

So after quite a bit of work, you can now (for the first time ever!) see each generation from William The Conqueror to Marguerite Freeney from the link above (after the page loads, be sure to scroll your browser to the right or you will think you are looking at a blank page).

Robet Bruce Polk – Ireland to Eastern Shore MD cir 1672

Polk -> Whittington -> Goslee -> Freeney

Bill Polk, Kansas City, MO., wrote some extensive notes on the Polk lineage dated 30 Nov 1998 — some excerpts:

Robert (Pollok) Polk and his family probably came to America from Northern Ireland sometime between 1672 and 1680. However, their arrival may have been earlier.”

“It 1659 he took ship at Londonderry, and after a stormy voyage, during which one of his children died, he landed on the Eastern Shore of Maryland……” It is probable that the family left Ireland to escape religious persecution (Robert was a Covenanter) and for the opportunities the new land afforded to practice their religion and build a home. Thomas, Robert’s elder brother, inherited the family estate in Ireland, and the opportunity to secure land of his own in the colonies must have been factored into the decision to leave Ireland.”

The Founding Howards

-> Howard

On my recent trip to MD I quite by accident located the gravestones for John Howard, b. 1826 and his wife Sarah BEW Howard b. 1828.

John and Sarah are the founding parents of our American Howard line, having immigrated from England cir. 1854 with their family. Here is graphical tree starting with John and Sarah to the present

Here is a complete listing of all of the Howard descendants I have starting with the grandfather of John Howard (who was also named John Howard b. 1760 in Hyde, Gee Cross, England)
