  • 1556: Philip II begins rule upon abdication of his father (Charles V "El Dorado"). He was King of Spain, Duke of Brabant, Count of Artois, Burgundy, Flanders, Hainaut and Namur.

  • 1570: de Lannoy's (prob.) go to England. If correct, they were probably fleeing the Duke of Alva (Governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1567-1573) and his reign of terror. (source: George English/Leiden archives)

  • 1571: Dutch Reformed Church (Netherlands Reformed Church) begins. A historical denomination of Christian Protestantism. It was the oldest Reformed church in the Netherlands. It was the 'public' or 'priviledged' church and the law required that every person in public office be a member. It was not mandated that all citizens be members however.
1572 
  • 1572: St. Bartholomews's Day Massacre. A day of death for Paris Protestants.
1578 
  • 1578: Lille, a part of Walloon Flanders, and heavily Protestant, is captured by Catholic armies under Parma. Many Walloon Calvinists fled to England directly, while others fled north towards the Protestant cities of Bruges and Antwerp. (source: NEHGR July 1989 p. 198,199) G.   • 1581-1584: First Walloon church in Leiden formed. Notes from pilgrimarchives.nl "Pilgrims who had contacts in the Walloon community visited the Walloon church. The Vrouwekerk (Our Lady’s church) that had been designated as a French (Walloon) church by the city council in 1584.

  • 1591: Guilbert de Lannoy moves from England to Leiden and is received as a member of the Walloon Church of Leiden, with his wife and their daughter Marguerite, by deposition of the Church at Canterbury.

  • 1610: Galileo's telescope challenges the teachings of the church. Provides evidence that the earth orbits the sun.
